General Research Institute for Nonferrous Metals (GRINM), established in November 1952, is the largest R&D institution in the field of nonferrous metals industry in China. GRINM was formally transformed into a large-scale hightech enterprise by Jan. 26th, 2000 when it obtained the business license as a central enterprise. Prof. Dianzuo Wang, vice president of Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), member of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and also foreign associate of National Academy of Engineering (NAE) of USA, is the honorary president of GRINM. Dr. Hailing Tu, a well-known expert of semiconductor materials in China, is the pre- sident.

GRINM is headquartered in downtown Beijing with an area of 250,000 square meters, with a production quarter 330,000 square meters in area in Tongzhou District. There are nearly 2,000 employees in GRINM, including 300 with Ph. D. or Master’s degrees. The research areas cover microelectronic and photoelectronic materials, rare and precious metals materials, rare earth materials, energy technology and materials, light metal structural materials, special alloy powder and powder metallurgy materials, superconductor materials, nano technology and materials, infrared optical materials, nonferrous metals processing technology, advanced mineral processing and metallurgy, nonferrous metal composites, equipment development and automation, materials analysis and testing, information engineering. The institute also hosts such national centers as National Industry Technology Development Base for Nonferrous Metals, National Engineering Research Center for Semiconductor Materials, National Engineer- ing Research Center for Rare Earth Materials, National Engineering & Technology Research Center for Nonferrous Metal Matrix Composite, National Analysis and Testing Center for Non- ferrous Metals & Electronic Materials and National Quality Supervision and Inspection Center for Nonferrous Metals.

Since the establishment, more than 5,000 projects have been carried out in GRINM, out of which over 4,000 scientific achievements have been obtained, more than 800 of them have been awarded national or ministerial prize and 300 national invention patents have been granted. After 50 years’ development, GRINM has been built into a comprehensive research institute covering a wide range of fields, capable of assuming key and important projects and solving sophisticated technological and engineering difficulties.
